Stem Cell Malaysia - Stem Cell Therapy & Anti Aging (2022)

As of October 2022, there are more than 200,000 scientific studies published on PubMed.gov and 7,000 on-going stem cell related studies on clinicaltrials.gov. Stem cell therapy has gained popularity as a promising treatment option for anti-aging, cosmetic, coronavirus and also conditions where the current medical treatment protocols have been exhausted. However, there is a lot of confusion due to the overwhelming mixing of credible scientific information and marketing hypes available on the internet.

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells can be viewed as master cells that can give rise to all types of cells in the body. Generally, stem cells are classified as unipotent, multi-potent or pluripotent according to their potential to differentiate. Stem cells can also be classified based on their source, for example, embryonic stem cells, foetal stem cells and adult stem cells.

Stem cells differ from other kinds of cells in the body. They are special because of their ability to self-renew, duplicate, regenerate and repair.

Stem cells have two important properties:
  • Capable of giving rise to all types of cells
  • Capable of self-renewing indefinitely

How Does Stem Cell Therapy Reverse the Aging Process?

As we age, the cells in our body age and die. Stem Cell Therapy is a good way to replenish our dying cells by replacing them with Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs), fresh stem cells derived from the umbilical cord of a newborn baby. Because these cells are young, the MSCs infused into your body has a high viability rate of 98% hence, a high chance in successfully replacing your dying cells.

Stem cells can delay the effects of aging as well as rejuvenate the body. Since aging is an effect of reduction of number of stem cells, and your body cannot naturally produce more stem cells on its own, stem cells from an external source have to be safely introduced into your body.

Stem Cell Therapy for Knees in Malaysia

As we age, the slippery tissues (cartilage) in our knees also wear out resulting in acute pain, swelling and a disabled knee. Stem Cell Therapy helps regenerate the cartilage that acts as a shock absorber and reduces friction in the joint.

Stem Cell Therapy Price in Malaysia

Is stem cell therapy covered by medical insurance? Yes and No. If it's for established indications like blood related (haematological) disorders like cancer (leukaemia and lymphoma) and some genetic disorders where there is already sufficient evidence; the cost of stem cell therapy is most likely to be approved by your insurance company. That said, please check with your insurance company for confirmation.

For indications that are off-label or experimental, where definitive evidence is still lacking; the stem cell therapy cost is unlikely to be covered or reimbursed.

The cost of stem cell related services will vary widely depending on the type of stem cell related services that you are looking for. Do take note that the total cost might include other related costs such as laboratory tests and imaging investigations (especially joint related problems).

Beyond the use of stem cell in bone marrow transplant, stem cell treatment for other indications are are already going through clinical trials and have shown positive results in diseases such as Diabetes, Heart Disease, knee osteoarthritis, back pain, autism and anti-aging purposes.

As a guide, the cost of mesenchymal stem cells in Malaysia may cost from RM 60,000 to RM 100,000 for 100 million cells.

In Malaysia, regenerative and anti aging stem cell therapy packages may cost from MYR 60,000 to MYR 100,000 depending on the providing stem cell therapy centres. Different stem cell therapy centres might have different treatment protocols and different sources of stem cells. However, it's important to know whether the stem cells you are getting are 'live' or 'dead' stem cells. There is of course a major difference in terms of 'live' or 'dead' stem cells especially on the effectiveness. Ask your medical provider for the information.

Stem Cells for Knee Regeneration Package (Knee stem cell therapy cost Malaysia) may cost from MYR 30,000 to MYR 40,000 for both knees. Medical insurance will unlikely to cover stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis as they prefer to wait for more definitive evidence before covering it. Still, when you compare it to the cost of long-term medications or the out-of-pocket cost of getting a knee replacement, stem cell therapy may still be a less expensive option.

Some of the reported and published stem cell therapy costs in Malaysia include the following:
    • The 1st Stem Cell Congress held in November 2012 in Malaysia reported that in private hospitals, the cost of transplant Allogeneic PBSCT (Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplant) ranges from RM 200,000 to RM 250,000. Through Tabung Bantuan Perubatan, the Ministry of Health is subsidising HSCT (hemopoietic stem cell transplant) done in University hospitals at MYR 40,000 - MYR 60,000 per transplant.

According to The Star, Guidelines for cell and gene therapy products (CGTPs) issued by the Health Ministry will be enforced from 2021, says Dr Lee Boon Chye (Deputy Health Minister). The 86 page guidelines can be downloaded from the NPRA (National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency) website here.

MACT (Malaysian Association for Cell Therapy) president Dr Lim Teck Onn said the effective use of stem cell for medical purposes was evidence-backed, but cell therapy might be controversial for aesthetic applications.

“The use of stem cell for genuine medical therapy has never really been an issue. There are data and proven trials and even US Food and Drug Administration-approved indications. The big problem however is its use in wellness, anti-aging and some beauty products. As an industry association, we have an obligation to make sure that companies involved in these activities do so responsibly and not take patients and consumers for a ride,” he said.

    Mesenchymal Stem Cells Malaysia

A recent scientific review on mesenchymal stem cells was led by a Malaysian researcher, Dr LL Liau from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (Curr Res Transl Med. 2020).

    According to the study's conclusion:

WJ-MSCs (Wharton Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells) have many advantages compared to MSCs (mesenchymal stem cells) from adult tissues. The discrepancies in the WJ-MSC characteristics reported in the above studies might have arisen from differences in cell isolation site and technique and cell culture procedure. Even though WJ-MSCs are safe and efficacious for treating certain diseases, most of the clinical studies/trials reported thus far do not provide sufficient evidence to support its routine use in the clinic.
